Highlands is a family friendly recreation center that provides safe and enriching programs and services to the community.
Communicate the center’s schedules, classes and news to its audience in a user-friendly manner.
Their website is now a trusted resource for current happenings at their center instead of being a stagnant repository of information.
Background. Based in San Mateo, Highlands is a vibrant recreation center that offers many classes and after-school programs including a preschool program. It has a thriving swimming program that serves adults and children. It also offers many recreational classes for adults and children. Being a government entity, it has to publicize the dates of its board meetings, and upload the various financial and board meeting documents to the website.
They had 2 main goals:
- The website should not look overwhelming with all the information.
- They wanted the ability to edit many parts of the website in-house.
Organize the content. First, we developed an information architecture that classified their voluminous content into neatly organized sections. Using wireframes and information flow, we defined the navigation structure of the website. We then created a new, modern and sleek website design that communicated their family friendly environment.
Enable in-house edits. Highlands has a lot of content on their website that change on various schedules: every few days, monthly and seasonally. Their pain point was that they had to rely on outside technical help to edit the content.
We developed their website on the open source framework of WordPress. This enabled us to devise foolproof ways for them to edit some of their content in-house. Highlands has been delighted with this feature! They are now in full control of the time-sensitive parts of their website, like the announcement of the pool closure.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization). They needed targeted SEO for a few swim programs and facility rental, but not for all the other services that they offered. We helped create a list of keywords and optimized their website for SEO. They appeared on the first page of Google organic search within a couple of months!
Highlands team is delighted to have an intuitive website that they can control. And their patrons are delighted to be able to rely on the website for the most up-to-date information.
